What’s your favorite chemical mask for treating acne?
The best chemical mask can have a huge impact on how well your skin is able to heal from acne.
Chemical masks, which are also known as topical exfoliants, are used to exfoliate, soften and soothe skin, while also helping with the growth of bacteria and other microbes.
They’re commonly prescribed by dermatologists to treat acne, particularly in combination with the use of benzoyl peroxide or other topical treatments.
But when it comes to acne, it’s best to focus on a well-balanced treatment with a combination of the best ingredients, said Dr. Jennifer L. Stolle, a dermatologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center.
“The chemical mask is a very effective exfoliating agent, but it can also help treat inflammation, which is an important issue for acne,” she said.
Chemical exfoliation ingredients and dosages range from less than one-tenth of an ounce to several ounces per day for the purposes of treating acne, said Lora A. Goss, MD, a registered nurse in New York City.
She recommends one teaspoon for each 5 to 15 milliliters of water you use daily for a single day.
“You’re trying to do something that will help your skin absorb the ingredients you’re using, and this can be tricky, because the ingredients that are commonly used in acne treatments don’t seem to be very effective at removing the dead skin cells,” she added.
If you’re trying a lot of different products to get the desired results, you should check with your dermatologist before beginning any new treatments.
You should also consider taking a daily vitamin supplement for the first few weeks, said Goss.
“If you have a combination treatment plan with multiple products, you may need to take a more frequent supplement.”
If you use a lot or all of the ingredients in a product, it can take up to two weeks for the treatment to kick in, she said, so it’s important to keep track of the number of times you’re applying each product to your skin.
“Do not skip out on this step,” she advised.
To help prevent breakouts, the best way to treat inflammation is by getting the best combination of products, said Stolles.
If acne becomes a big issue for you, you can consider trying an all-natural skin treatment like a facial peel, said Alyssa A. DeSantis, a Registered Nurse and owner of Dermatology in Atlanta.
You can also try a facial mask for the acne-prone areas in your face.
The mask may be applied in a circular motion, and can be applied with a cotton ball, sponge, brush or finger.
For best results, apply a small amount to the area closest to the offending area, followed by a larger amount to another area.
DePasos recommends applying a full face mask and using a small volume of a liquid exfoliator for your treatment.
If the mask is too thick to apply, you might want to apply a light moisturizer, such as a watermelon or almond skin cream, she added, adding that this should help your face feel soft and hydrated.
If your skin has become very inflamed or sensitive, you could use a cream or gel.
If itchy and irritated skin occurs, you’re better off with a cream.
“Try to find a cream that is good for your skin and not something that is too strong or too strong and dry, because it may irritate your skin,” she explained.
DePaul University dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey A. Smith, MD , also said that for the most part, acne is not an inflammatory condition.
But he advised that you use topical exoxives if you’re concerned about the effectiveness of one particular treatment.
“I’d just avoid applying a lot in one day, or just a few in one treatment, because you’re going to burn through it,” he said.
A good acne-fighting treatment for acne is a combination solution of benzyl alcohol and an oil, said Smith.
If benzyl is present, the benzyl esters in the benzoylamine are what create the chemical mask.
“When you use benzyl to cleanse your skin, you use it to remove dead skin cell debris,” he explained.
If not enough benzyl exists to make a benzyl-alcohol solution, you’ll need to use a water-based oil.
If using benzyl, he said that if you use too much benzyl or a water based oil, you risk a buildup of benzene in your skin that will cause more breakouts and redness.
“But the best solution for treating skin irritation is a good-quality oil, like olive or jojoba oil, that is able be applied over the skin to clean it,” said Smith, adding he recommends applying the oil at the same time you apply benzyl. When using
