Many of these chemicals are used for the same reasons that they treat heart attacks and stroke: they can help to improve the quality of heart tissue.
The main goal of a chemical heart treatment is to improve heart function and prevent further heart failure and heart disease, but many of these products can also treat a range of other diseases and conditions, too.
Some of the chemicals that can be prescribed for heart disease include: acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) – an amino acid used to treat muscle weakness and heart failure, and can also be used as a muscle relaxant.
ALCAR is usually prescribed for people with heart failure who cannot tolerate an amino-acid diet.
It is also used to help patients with chronic heart failure treat muscle pain.
alpha-adrenoceptor blocker (α-ARBA) – a chemical compound that blocks the action of an enzyme that converts carbohydrates into fat.
This prevents fat accumulation in the heart muscle.
